Liquid alternatives allow investors to access alternative asset classes or strategies through mutual fund or ETF vehicles, combining many of the benefits of alternatives with the daily liquidity many investors desire.
Liquid alternatives offer greater flexibility than traditional mutual funds or ETFs – not only are there fewer restrictions on the types of assets they can hold, but also flexibility to employ alternative approaches including increased allowance for the use of leverage and the use of derivatives for hedging and non-hedging purposes.
These alternative sources of returns, often with a lower correlation to stocks and bonds, provide the potential for diversification, lower volatility and attractive risk-adjusted returns when added to a portfolio.
